broken red dragon 1500
So the red dragon died on my alpha skimmer. Need to find a replacement. Vertex want 400 for a motor block that is not a red dragon and i'm afraid the impeller and housing won't fit. Has anyone changed out their pump with a pump you can still currently get?

Alternate pump to the Red Dragon...???
I hope this helps as I was doing some research on the Red Dragon pumps. Here is a cut and paste from another reef forum...
"The Laguna Max Flo 1500 is the same motor block as the RD 1500. You do get a longer power cable though. The other difference is that the RD has the base plate with the rubber feet which you either need to carefully remove from the RD and glue onto the Laguna or So cal tropical reef outlet has a base they sell for the Laguna pump which should work in conjunction with the Alpha. Once you get the pump, you transfer the impeller housing and impeller onto the Laguna and you are set. I recently purchased a Max-Flo 1500 just so I have a spare pump. You take apart the pond pump assembly and inside is the pump motor." And here is a link to the thread... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2325185 Here is a link to just the motor block... http://www.lagunaponds.com/en_us/lag...pproved-pt715/ Does it compare to your Red Dragon? I would want to look at the spec's on both pumps to make sure that they compare. Cheers, Norman |

And if you can't find the Laguna Max Flo 1500 pump, the replacement for it is apparently the Laguna Max Flo 1350 (PT#8240).

I (BBlinks) replaced my RD pump in a Mini 180 with a Laguna 1350 from Homesalive. Canadian site and you can order by part so no need to spend extra on unnecessary parts. If you have trouble or are a big procrastinator like me BBlinks hourly rate is $1000000 hour.

Same thing happened to my Alpha 250 skimmer. I purchased it from an American vendor and they were able to order in a replacement Red Dragon motor block from Germany for ~$250 US at the time which was several years ago.
It was cheaper and quicker for me to replace the pump with a Reef Octopus DC RODC 5500S pump which had very similar specs in terms of water/air draw and also came with the added bonus of being controllable.
