Actually that is my mystery light switch, it doesn't seem to be connected to anything.

The fireplace is a wood burning one, so no that wouldn't be it. I've tested many ideas over the years to see what it could possibly be connected to, but nothing panned out. Literally doesn't seem connected to anything.

It would be a kick if every time you flick the switch the neighbours kitchen light went on & off

A few years ago my friend suggested the same, doubtful but it would be funny.

When I tried to put a GFIC plug in for the tank (couldn't get it to work) I noticed that there was 2 extra black wires (capped) in the plug outlet. That outlet is right below the light switch so maybe there is someway to connect it to that
