Exactly my thoughts. If I use less units, higher up, at 100%, don't I get the same results??

Provided you're happy with the spread there's no reason you can't do that. For me, I picked up one unit for my 3 foot tank and to get the side to side spread I needed I had the thing 18" above and had a TON of light spillage over the front. So, since I'm hunting for a 4 foot tank upgrade anyway I decided to bite the bullet and get the second unit now. It's crazy over kill for my current tank but when I find my 4 footer I'll already have a lighting system that works for it!
