Cool skimmer. Not exactly a fit-in-the-stand kind of model though is it?

Are you using a gate valve on the output?

What color is dark skimmate. In my old setup I was able to get 1/2 litre of black coffee skimate ever week and now I get a good litre every 2-3 days but more like really light tea. Which is better?

Your correct Tony, You basically have to have the fish room that I have to do this kinda thing.
I am using a 1.5" union ball valve on the output. it has almost no resistance on the lever when adjusting it so its perfect. It was also from my old 75g basement sump setup so it's free. Fine adjustments area easy.

IMO Seriak. Dark skimmate is like coffee and the cup gets "chunkies" in it.

It's impossible to say which is better. light skimmate means you have to add and pay for more salt for top up. As well you will skim out more things from the tank which may be a benifit for the tank, I think .
I like darker skimmate myself.

Hey Jon,

Got any diagrams for a skimmer that would be suitable for a 20gal heavily stocked tank? I want to build one but cannot find nice schematics. And I need one thats is fairly compact but gets good skimmate. Does not use a air pump. I am thinking the injector type.. can be in sump or external.. not a hang on.. Your thoughts and opinions are welcome and appreciated..

Thanks

Chad

Hey Chad.
I don't have any specific diagrams in front of me. Sorry.
Most skimmers are very easy in theory and I had no plan on paper when building this skimmer as well as everything else I do.

Most of my plans are mulled over in my head over and over again till I come up with, what I think is a design that will work and then I build it.

You just have to do some research about skimmer basics and you can easily build one out of acrylic,pvc,5g water jug, IO bucket.....etc....Just about anything.

Jon, now that you have run it for a bit is there anything that you would have done different? did you think about trying a spray type injection?
