I don't think it's Gigas either. I recall purchasing it as a Maxima. On another forum - some say it's a Durasa - I'm not convinced of that either. lol
Eh....I'm just enjoying the view. |

I recently lost my Hippopus. Well, it might be about 6 months ago it finally let go, but still it sucks because you almost never see those in stores either. There was a nice gigas for sale at a LFS here in Calgary. Thing sat in their tanks for over a year and it was pure torture looking at it, wanting it in my tank, but not even having space for it in my 280g! Thing was a behemoth. I would estimate shell size at 18" and the mantle would extend easily 24" or more and maybe 10" wide. Just incredible. Whomever took it home is either not on Canreef or worse yet, IS, but never shows it off on here. Either way .. it's too bad it isn't being shown off.

I'll try and take a picture of the shell tonight when the light setting is near dusk. I understand what you mean by the she'll shape and texture. I'm certain it's not a Derasa. This particular clam is approx. 10" in width (flesh of mantle folds), and easily 14" in length, 6" tall (just the shell). The size of just the shell is approx. the size of a football.
Sorry to hear about your loss. It's amazing how we get attached to our display. btw - SO jealous of the size of the displays some have out West. lol As for sharing/showing off online/CanReef.....I can understand some not wanting to share their little slice of the ocean. I know some are fairly private and don't want to share their little piece of solitude from the world. Last edited by Taipan; 10-29-2013 at 08:58 PM. Reason: Spelling.... |

A very diplomatic answer, of course. I am, on the other hand, just jealous and petty and whining because I couldn't have it in my own tank.

Squammie......
The general consensus among LFS and fellow hobbyists is that it's a Squamosa Clam. I learned something new today....after keeping for all these years.
P.S. - VERY Nice clams: kien and Ryanerickson. Keep them coming. P.P.S. - Diplomatic is another term for....... Last edited by Taipan; 10-30-2013 at 12:37 AM. |
