If I wanted more corals than fish...smaller more cube-like dimensions. If I wanted lots of nice fish, tangs included, I would do a larger tank, 6+ feet in length.

My ideal or dream tank would be in the center of a room with bar seating all around it. 6'X4'X2' ... some day!

But like steve said....realistically its more based on where you are putting it, and how much space is available.

Yeah 6x4 is actually probably better, a bit easier to work in. In that case maybe I'd do 8x4

The ideal tank is not too big, not too small. In fact, it's the one that's just right.

8X3X3 for the fish with a nice live coral for the back drop, with a room in behind the tank.

The ideal tank to me is the largest tank you can fit in the chosen location.....Plus 50 gallons.
