Thats the only thing I've ever had to clean out of mine. I get no algae in my tank, because I've got a handful of algae eaters that don't ever let it get a foot hold and my phosphates are usually just above zero, however, in the coast to coast overflow itself where there are no fish or snails, I get some green hair algae, and when it decides to let go ... it usually partially blocks the strainer.

Having that secondary pipe comes in super handy here though, and will on your setup as well Doug ... the bit of extra flow if a strainer becomes partially blocked is easily handled by the second drain, allowing you a safety net until you have an opportunity to notice it and get it cleaned out.
