![]() You can cut them anywhere you want without killing them. However any amount that you leave behind will grow into a new colony. I've cut at my toadstool while it was still in the tank several times without any adverse effects. But if you're worried you can pull the rock out or if that is not possible just follow your fragging session with a water change and some fresh carbon.
