Make sure you're taking into account any head loss and other slow down of water flow from piping/nozzles, etc. Personally my 65 gal has a return of ~700-900GPH and I like it, but it depends on what you've got in the tank and sump and what your goal is. I have my skimmer off the side in the sump in a quieter baffle and it does just fine.
