If this is for your 85 gallon tank you referred to in another post I can tell you what's working in my 90 gallon reef, and that will give you a good basis to go on. Be aware that hermit crabs are opportunistic, and if they are hungry they will eat snails.

So in my 90 gallon reef I have:

1 black Brittle starfish (one of the few easy to keep species, it is nocturnal though so I rarely see it)
2 Fighting conch (great for sand bed & detritus)
1 Hector's Goby (small sand sifting fish that doesn't make a big mess like some others)
3 Astraea snails
4 Ring Cowries
2 Emerald crabs

Asterina starfish and Stomatella snails breed freely in the tank too.
