should I remove my balls?

Hi all, i just started up a 29gl biocube after a 5year absence in the hobby. I'm just wondering if i should remove the bio balls in the second chamber and simply replace them with a bag of chemipure and some filter floss or has anyone had success with there balls not turning into a nitrate factory?
