can I take that rock out (only place it is growing right now) and scrub it off with a toothbrush without damaging the polyp carpet?

maybe take it out, try some tweezers and pull what u can before the brush.
is it really stuck on? would shooting a turkey baster or strong powerhead at it blow it off? |

If you can pull it out, you can scub it lightly with a soft brush in a pail of salt water, and make sure it is rince out as much as you can.
