![]() At this point in your cycle I would not worry about doing water changes. I would let it runs its course. You would want to do water changes if you had livestock in there that would be harmed due to your high levels of Ammonia.. but you don't so its okay. You'll do water changes towards the end of the cycle to remove the final product Nitrite. Once the tank has finished cycling there should be a balance of bacteria which will convert Ammonia into Nitrite and Nitrite to Nitrate so you should not get readings for Ammonia or Nitrite. Then just water changes to remove the Nitrite.

Some people don't believe in using fish to help the cycle along, some do. I think it is a bit cruel because the cycle is a very harsh environment. In salt water we are a little lucky in that we can use live rock. Likely what's happening is all the formerly live stuff (micro and some macro organisms) that was on your "live rock" is dieing off and causing the ammonia spike. In a way you can think of it as a blessing. Some people don't get such a reaction so they have to resort to other methods to jumpstart their cycle by adding stuff to their tank.. either fish or chemicals. ![]() Ya, if you had livestock in there you'd definitely want to intervene with some water changes. But then in my opinion you shouldn't be cycling with livestock :P

![]() There is a long answer and there is a short answer. The short answer is, when Ammonia and Nitrites measure zero. I will spare you my long answer. |
