Default enclosing overflow top

i can assure you this works just fine. i've had so many snails, hermits and even clownfish tumbling into overflow that i ended up enclosing overflowtop with eggcrate. i cut eggcrate a little larger than overflow circumferance and placed a glassblock ontop to hold it down.

I thought SeaHorse was referring to building up the wall with eggcrate, I guess enclosing it would be easier but what if the when the fish jumps like I'm assuming it does to get back there then woudn't it die because it would be out of water ?

If you keep smaller fish that are curious like a longnose hawk they will usually find their way through eggcrate, the holes are just too big.
Here is a picture of the aquamedic overflow combs which are adjustable and well suited for your application. I ended up going with a one piece custom made acrylic comb instead but I suggest you look for something along this line instead of eggcrate.

From this next picture you can get an idea of how the comb styles work & look in my overflow.

I dont think the hawkfish is getting through the holes but I could be wrong. He's a fair size, I was assuming he was jumping over the top of the overflow.

My over flow is square on the top so I just cut an overly large square and placed it right on. Keep in mind this will increase the water height in your tank. Has worked well for me.
