Yes, I had a look at the online manual. According to the OEM, the most efficient way to run the pump is to glue the slip fitting into the output. That would be my recommendation then, especially if running externally. You then have the threaded coupling to adapt to pretty much any other plumbing you choose - a union as sphelps recommended is a good thing. If you strip the threads somewhere along the line, you might be able to carefully drill out the glued portion, although looks like that would take a sizeable drill bit.

Even if using it submerged, relying on just a slip fit could spell disaster. If the hose/fitting pops out, depending on mounting orientation of the output, you could end up pumping water out of your sump onto the floor (or on to exposed electrical gear in the vicinity, yikes) and your display level would drop, pump then runs dry....etc. etc. These things have a way of happening when you're not around too.
