No way, go african! Hehe. I'm actually in the middle of setting up a south american tank with a couple discus.
But I have a soft spot for african cichlids... i love them. Setting up a tank with a colony of a couple different species that are all endemic to the same location, it will look awesome. All thier colors compliment each other.
