Do the new ones now come with MH lighting, or am I just special and can only find the ugly modded ones?

nope
The red sea max only comes with the "t5 power compacts" which are 55 watt power compacts.
The new JBJ 28 gallon nano comes with the 150 watt halide unit, wavemaker, and skimmer. Nate Both are available in all edmonton and Calgary stores
