I put one in my basement. Its not difficult, but you MUST make sure you follow the clearance specs for the unit. They are provided by the manufacturer and may vary from unit to unit, so make sure you have the fireplace first before doing your framing. The venting is pretty simple, but must also meet the correct codes for clearances and height. I had to go out through the foundation with mine, so I had to hire a guy to core the hole for that. The gas connection can only be done by a licensed gas fitter.

I got my fireplace from Wood's. I got a mid range model that has a few more features than the basic one that the builder installed on the main floor. It has better lining material for more efficient heat radiation, and it has an automatic temperature control with a remote. There are lots of choices depending on your budget. Like anything else, shop around to get an idea of what is available and to compare prices.
