my profile > view/update profile > avatar image > select different avatar image > CLICK

When you are in the window with all the provided avatar images, at the bottom is a field titled "custom URL" in which you will copy and paste the following line:

http://members.shaw.ca/reefs/bob_avatar.gif

Then it will show the Bob avatar back at the top of that window. Then click "use this avatar" and off you go.
