I change about 40 gallons of water once a month. I know this is too much for a reef tank, but I'm too lazy to change a small amount of water every week, and since my corals are used to it, it doesn't bother me.

according to advanced aquarist, you've hit the money. They recommend a 30% water change once a month to be suffice.
they found that frequent small water changes are quite useless at removing pollutants and replenishing minerals compared to less frequent large changes
