I honestly thought about working there when I finished uni. There or at Alias in Toronto.. I ended up doing some research in visualization in the area of kinesiology for UofC, but on a contract basis. When the opportunity presented itself to get a full-time job in an completely unrelated and uninteresting industry I took it, thinking I'd keep it for a year or two and pay off some debt, and go back to uni. and get the masters degree specializing in graphics and visualization and animation. BUT, 6.5 years later I am still working that crummy job and still paying off debt, and haven't touched anything to do with graphics or geometric modeling or rendering in years and years now. ... sigh ... shouldda just gone to California back then. Couldda shouldda wouldda.

PIXAR rocks! Over the years I've even met people who work there (thanks to the reefing hobby as a matter of fact! :D ), and they tell me it's everything you can imagine it to be, and more.

So - moral of the story: don't be like me -- don't give up on that dream!

I look back at the stuff I worked on 6-7 years ago and it was on the forefront in animation and modeling. Nowadays, stuff has grown so rapidly, the stuff I was working on is kids stuff. But I never get tired of seeing how these guys can push the envelope.

Oh well. Am looking forward to this new movie big time!

well a lot has changed in the cg industry (and it changes so quickly at that) Since your schooling, the software is built more towards artist then programmers. The creative brain power in the industry is unbelievable. The stuff that the artist comes up with is crazy. Has any one seen the new block buster commercials with the bunny and Guinea pigs? they blow my mind. I just finished my schooling in 3D animation and VFX from BCIT. I'm currently working on a Visual effects shot of a girl walking a dragon down a city street. (its a lot of fun) Where is it that your working now?

PS your right, I almost did give up on my dream but I don't plane to relent. Have you ever thought about going back to school and getting a job at Pixar?

(oh

Yeah, AliasWavefront ... it was too many letters to type in. :D

About going back to school ... sometimes. Yeah, the tools are geared more for the artists so that they can create. And that is the way it should be. I never could draw, that's why I went into CG :D My interests were mainly in the creation of tools so that people who COULD draw could do so without having to worry about the math. (Man, I used to understand math. Now I can hardly calculate a tip when I go out to a restaurant! )

The stuff we were working on in the Human Performance Lab at UofC was pretty keen. We took a geometric model of a human skeleton. We then took human models/actors and taped little balls at strategic points along joints and muscles, and filmed them at various angles of them performing various activities such as walking, running, swinging a glof club, etc. We then took the paths the coloured balls took, and applied them to the geometric model of the skeleton. Then the kinesiology people would do .. um ... kinesiology stuff ... like investigating various stresses on joints etc. (At that point my job was done ... I'm just a software hack.) It actually was pretty interesting work, but being a research environment meant the pay kinda sucked, and my entire existence depended upon the projects getting various funding, and .. well some other factors too, made it overall a fairly stressful lifestyle... so I bailed when I got an offer for full-time work. Whoops.

Motion tracking is cool. I had a chance to play around with it when I was in school. We rigged up our own tracking system and ran it through some software. We also played with building 3D models from photographs.

Hey Cheapreef. How are you? You asked me where I work at, well I don't not yet. The VFX shoot I'm doing is for my new demo reel (the one I did in school was crap). Who is your brother, I may have heard of him. One of my teachers came from EA sports. Who is this person that works on smallville? I would love to work on something like that, hell I would even do it for free, just to get the work experience. Also any contacts i could get to help me into the industry would be great (its kinda hard to get in there).

Cheers!
