Steve can you be more specific please... (joke)
I've been hearing that a 150w HQI is more equivelent to a 175 SE MH and a 250HQI is comparable to a SE 400w MH. What's the low down, would a 250 HQI be to much for say a 3ft 50 gallon tank?

depends if you are using DE bulbs or SE bulbs on the HQI ballast, also depends on what 400's you are comparing to, the only 400 watt set up I have measured ( out of 4) that out preforms my 250's were an iwasaki and they were slightly higher. do a search on my old posts on lighting output or something like that, my test results should still be on here. a few other things you need to answer are, how deep is a 50 gal tank? how much rock you got in it? how much sand.. ect.. personally I don't think a 250 HQI ballast is to much for any tank and depending on the bulb selection (DE or SE) you could get away with 1 in a 3 foot tank, if you use DE's you will need two pretty much.

Hello,

No one can ever beat Steve for the title of the undisputed expert in lighting electrical. Steve, have you thought of publishing some type of book or material for lighting related topics? I for sure will buy a copy.

Titus, you flatter me, I actually never though of it as I only got really interested as there wasn't much available in that area a few years ago when I was setting up my tank and asking silly questions

I am working on lighting part 2 for the newbie forum, hope to have it done soon.
