Criminologist says if someone breaks into your home, the Criminal Code gives you a lot of latitude
METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A man has been charged with murder in a crime that has shocked the region.

Khouri Green is accused of shooting Colin Hill as he broke into his home. Hill was at home with his family at the time of the attack late Sunday night.

Criminologist Neil Boyd says this type of crime, where the victim dies in his own home and didn’t know his attacker, is relatively rare in Canada.

“It’s always a worry, of course, for people to hear a noise, hear of somebody breaking in. It’s somewhat neighbourhood-dependent. The more vulnerable neighbourhoods are more prone to an attack,” he explains.

Boyd says when it comes to these circumstances, the Criminal Code gives you a lot of latitude.

“Obviously, you’re not going to shoot somebody who’s [just on] your property, but if you use deadly force in defense of your home, it’s extremely unlikely that you would be held accountable.”

Green has been charged with second-degree murder.
