Coast to Coast Overflow

If you had an opportunity to go with a coast to coast overflow in a large tank, how shallow (top to bottom) would you go and why? I'd like as shallow as possible to allow for good vortech placement on the back wall but I'm interested in everyone's opinion. Thanks in advance.
