I actually take my XC bike out just about every Wednesday with some buds and hit some trails around the city. May not be up to par with your C-Town trails but its still loads of fun as well. What you are actually hearing is the bike whining it needs to be cleaned as it got a little muddy last week and i haven't cleaned it yet.

I was out last Wednesday as well, what a sloppy mess lower Mill Creek was. Where you run along the river between the Mutart and the golf course heading east was also a mud fest.
