those thorns are its "ribs" it needs to be target fed carefully in low flow observe it digest the food to confirm no shrimp or crabs are stealing its foods. i neglected a brain coral for a bit and when i realised i moved it into a small plastic bin and drilled a ton of holes in it. the holes allowed for really low flow. i mounted the container at the top corner of my tank to allow quick and easy target feeding, without fear of predators stealing the foods. your scolymia looks like it should pull through fine with a little extra care.
good luck.
