I know there was a good on NR about closing off the overflow area on biocubes. Might be worth diggin for? It wasn't anything real complicated, just cutting a piece of acrylic to the correct size and siliconing it into the lid. To make seal the piece against the actual overflow when the lid is closed, flexible airline tubing was siliconed in place along the length of the acrylic piece. at least, i think that's how it went.
