There are hundreds of different types of bristle worms. Even those beautiful hawaiian featherdusters in your tanks are related.

The most common bristle worm that you see in your tank (the pink and purple ones) are harmless detrivores, more beneficial then any clean up crew you can buy in the store and don't grow any longer then about 18". If you see or hear about a bristle worm eating corals it is NOT one of these guys, it is a different type entirely.
