I picked up a $20 18" T8 black light at Home Depot today, just to see if it would fit, and to see if it would fluoresce my tank at all. I put the bulb in my $10 plastic 18" fluorescent strip light that I also picked up at Home Depot awhile ago (they still sell these cheapo plastic fixtures).

The bad news:

The 15W black light doesn't have any effect on my tank against 108W of daylight bulbs.

The good news:

1. I can return the bulb.
2. The strip light fits under the lid of my canopy - just barely.
3. The strip light takes 18" T8 bulbs.

It looks like I'll be able to add an affordable actinic light to my tank after all. Here's my next question:

Will a 15W actinic bulb noticeably offset four 27W daylight mini-compact fluorescent ("spiral") bulbs?
