Default reactor pump

I am building a DIY calcium reactor and need a re-circ pump for it. I have a Little-Giant 2MDQ-SC 500gph @ 0'head/400gph @ 5'head that I used as a return pump for my 55g, but too many bubbles, too much noise. Would this pump be a little bit on the large side for my reactor, even if I throttle it down? Should I just go for the Ehiem 1048? I like the idea of using the LG because I already have it, but.... Thanks for any input
