Clownfish can live fine without an anemone to host in.
My Oc. false percs are trying to host in my rhodactis mushrooms.  If you're new to the hobby, you should realize that anemones are difficult to take care of & should go into a mature tank. How long has your tank been set up? What size tank? What type of lights? Anemones really appreciate MH lighting & only Long tentacle & Bubble tips have the best success rates. Some other anemones are near impossible to keep although there will always be a few who've done it. If you give us more info about your set up we can answer your questions better. Anthony
