You might want to invest in good nitrate test kit if you don't already have one. Test both your tap water and the output of your RO system. I'd also test your stored RO water.

If you're adding nitrate directly to your tank, it could explain the dino explosion.

ETA: and I thought Calgary's TDS was high but I never test more than 140 on my meter
