I had a Remora and it was ok. I'd suggest that you go onto the "Reef" forum and post a question there. Be as specific as you can about what your setup will likely be. For example, indicate how large your tank and sump (if using) will be (total water volume is important). Also, while you may not know just yet, try and indicate what kind of livestock you hope to keep (and how many of what). the bio load on the tank will dictate to a large degree what kind and size of skimmer would be best suited. Consider buying used; it'll save you money and you'll likely want to change whatever you buy within a year anyhow as you learn more !
For the live rock/sand, keep an eye on the For Sale sections (skimmers can be found there too !). LOTS of stuff goes up on there each week and if you're a little patient you can get good deals. Feel free to post a wanted or "Looking For:" ad as well. Be sure to check the location of the poster as not everyone is in Calgary !
