Nu-2reef is correct.

Live rock is and has to be wet rock with living organisims on and in it.

Typically we recommend 1/4 live rock (wet, seed rock) and 3/4 dry rock. Over time the organisims on the live rock will populate the dry rock and at some point you won't be able to tell which was your live and which was the dry rock you started with.

Downside of Reefer-Rock is that its slightly more heavy then a rock like Fiji and you have to wait for it to become live. The upsides are that its alot cheaper, very easy to aquascape with, no hitchikers, no organics etc etc etc

For a 180 gallon tank I would recommend 125lbs of Reefer Rock and 30-40lbs of a live seed rock.

We have about 1000lbs of Reefer Rock in a live form but due to shipping costs we have decided only sell the live rock locally in Kitchener/Waterloo (would need to be shipped priority overnight which would bring the price to around $6-7/lb). We sell the live Reefer Rock out of our outlet for $4/lb and our live Fiji for $4.50/lb
