The choice of wood for the trim of your aquarium cabinet is strictly your choice. It should compliment any other woods within the room, like coffee tables etc. Most hardwoods will have similar strengths and durability.

I have used Oak with a Brandy stain and a clear Topcoat to prevent water marks.

Whatever wood you choose be sure to stain it and put a water resistant clear topcoat on it for protection.
