Default foam under tank

Is it recommended to have foam between tank and stand and if so how thick also are all using backings for the tank ie all blue or black or a aquascapt type.

I recomend going to the local home depot and getting the 1/2" pink styrofoam there. you don't want to go any thicker than that or it could be unstable and if you could find 1/4" that would be better if your surface is nice and flat.
