![]() Ok tank is 135 gallon SPS I was thinking 2xTunze stream 6060(in the front corners of the tank), Mag 1200 feeding a 1" Sea Swirl(in the back middle of the tank) this being a closed loop, C-siphon overflow CS-150 (1600gph)(on left side of the tank) to sump with return being a Mag 1800 comming out on the right side of the tank. Questions or Comments appreciated.

![]() I think its a pretty good setup. I have the tunze on the multicontroller. I really like the pulse action. I'd recommend it, but the sea swirl will work fine for creating random flow

![]() First are Mags good as an external pump, I have read about them leaking, this is not from my experience but just what I have read when researching pumps.
Second if you ditched the closed loop and spent the money instead on upgrading to a higher strength of Tunze stream, might this not work better. The 6060's are not controllable but the more expensive streams are, you might consider this option. I have one Tunze 6060 stream for my 120g tank, you might find these are a bit large to place in the front corner of a tank. |

![]() Trevor, I think that is a good choice. Upgrading to the variable speed Tunzes would be a lot more money.
The MAG pumps work just fine as an external pump, but you might want to consider a MAK 4 instead.

![]() Hi I will look into the mak 4 and perhaps down the road I will add a couple 6100 but I am for sure not made of $$ so that will be it for now thanks everyone for the comments if you have anymore feel free. Also I forgot to mention I already have 1 6060 so I would like them to match.

![]() Brad why the MAK 4 over the mag 1800 the mak 4 only does 1198gph. With the overflow doing 1600gph would it be better have a pump be able to flow more than the overflow or would it be better to have the overflow be able to flow more than the pump? Also I was a bit concerned about the mag 1200 doing 50gph more than the sea swirl was rated for (1150gph), should I be?

![]() I think the MAK4 will give you more flow by the time it gets to the tank. It handles pressure a bit better and is therefore a more versatile pump. Same price range as the MAG as well.
As for the sea swirl, by the time the MAG 12 gets water to come out the sea swirl, your 1200gph will hqave dropped a fair bit. Even on a closed loop, you have head loss due to friction in the pipes. Outside of a closed loop, head loss is even greater.

![]() I have one in my stand, not very loud, and I've never stuck my tongue to it to test temp! I can't say it adds any more heat to the tank than a MAG 18 though.

![]() running on a skimmer, the mak4 is loud. Just running as a return, its a great pump.
the head loss from the mag pumps is pretty significant. I forget where I saw the chart, but someone had put together a chart of a bunch of popular pumps and their flow characteristics. Probably was on RC or RDO. Do you already have the sea swirl? if not, have you considered the oceansmotions.com product? I have the heavy duty 4 way unit and its put together sooo simply I dont think it can ever break down. |
