MH ballast question

I was wondering..
i been reading on the web about MH bulbs...
that some bulbs require...M57 ballasts...or M90 ballasts..or M something ballast

i was wondering...what does that mean?
or does it matter at all? as long as the wattage is correct for the ballast and that is fine??
