Default anyone try an evaporative cooler in Vancouver?

Has anyone tried using an evaporative/swamp cooler to cool their rooms? Does it work? I read that they don't work well in places with high humidity. Just wondering how many degrees cooler it can cool a small room. An example of a swamp cooler is the Convair.

I have a fan blowing across the top of my tank now that probably cools the tank 3-4 degrees. But now, the humans in the room need cooling too. Its a hot summer.

Sam...how are you? I tried one of those Convair machines from Costco. They ain't cheap. I think it's about $400 by the time you walk out of Costco. Anyway, it has to be placed close to an open window and you have to leave a door or window open across the way in order for this machine to work. If you have to go out, you can't leave the machine on cuz you have to close the windows.

The water evaporates relatively quickly so you have to fill it up every couple of hours. You do feel the cool air and it can cool a room down a room down a couple of degrees. The other problem is that it does add a lot of moisture in your room. Finally, you get this smell of dampness in your room. Furthermore, the unit is huge and it takes up a lot of room. IMO I think the idea is good, but the hassles sure outweighs the benefits.

I returned my machine within two weeks and they gave me my money back .

I am now saving up for those portable air conditioners. They range from $499 (for 4000btu/100-125sf) to $1299 (for 9000btu/200sf). The Japanese units are lot quieter, but you pay for that luxury. I figured that if I can keep my room cool, it should keep the temperature of my tank down. So I am better off spending my money on an air conditioner rather than a chiller. With an air conditioner, everyone is happy .

Hey, thanks for the info. I guess they aren't popular here then. Apparently they work great in deserts.

My wife got her way and I got central air and I have to say that was the end of tank temp problems ... steady at 82F all the time ... even if you can cool the room the tank is in would work ... besides then you will spend more time enjoying your reef

Cheers

These units are more commonly know as desert coolers in teh mid east

As the name suggests they are more suited to low moisture enviornments

I cannot see these units being effective anywhere like Montreal or Toronto, As these units depend in water evaporation

I think your best bet is air conditioning, But do not go for those portable units. I tried to cool our server room last year with a 10,000 btu unit and was very disapointed. ( its a 10 by 12 room with 4 servers only )

IMHO you are better off with AC than these coolers unless you live in Arizona or Southern Cali
