Default Evil work!

So I'm having a crappy weekend. I found out Friday afternoon that my wonderful boss (Dorothy) from the past 3 years was "let go" without any notice!

Apparently some funding got cut from a different program and my boss's boss (Kathy's) job got cut. However since Kathy has been with the company for 20 years, upper management held a meeting with Dorothy Friday morning and told her she was being let go and Kathy would be taking over her job. Horror of all horrors because Dorothy was the nicest boss I've ever had, and Kathy is a real nasty person who loves to ridicule people and look down on others.

What really sucks is that none of us employees had a clue this was going to happen. My co-workers and I left work to go out for lunch and by the time we got back we were met by some of the upper managers handing out letters saying Dorothy is no longer working for us and as of Monday Kathy will be our new boss. None of us had a chance to say good-bye to Dorothy or anything, she was told to clear out her desk and leave before we even knew what was happening

Still in a bit of shock and deeply sadden by the whole ordeal. Also really worried about what it's going to be like having Kathy as a boss. Really not looking forward to Monday

Can they do something like that? That seems very harsh was there something else maybe? Just seems like they would need some sort of darn good reason to me!
What do I know, from the sounds of it must be a horrible place to work-with all the
ups and downs.

Wow, that's appaulling. Dorothy would probably be entitled to severance pay, she should look into that.

Yes, I think the labour laws requires them to pay her severance &/or give her two weeks notice if she is being let go without cause (other than funding cut). Not sure, but she should really look into that.

Normally it's not to bad of a place to work, it is a daycare center that I work at. However our center is part of a larger organization that provides a lot of community services for many people. As we are a non-profit society the community services we provide are primarily funded by the government. It was due to government cuts backs that one of the services that we had provided for the community we are now no longer able to do so. Kathy was the head of one of these services, and since she has been an employee for 20 years they deiced to create a position within the company for her. Unfortunately they created a position by letting my boss (the daycare director) go.

There not really saying but I believe there was a bit more to it as well. About a month ago Dorothy got reprimanded for spending money on toys and supplies that we needed and wanted, it wasn't a lot of money but every so often (2-3 months) Dorothy would spend about $150-300 on toys and supplies for us. The company is running a bit of a deficit right now so spending is supposed to be kept to a minimum, however there will always be a need to new toys and new supplies in a child care center. I believe the cut backs may have given the company an excuse to "let her go".

Sorry I should of mentioned it, but management did say that they came up with an agreeable severance package for her upon her departure. I did talk to Dorothy Friday night after everything had happened (to let her know how sorely missed she will be etc.) and needless to say she was still in a bit of shock about everything as well, especially as prior to this happening, she was very happy with her job and had no plans of leaving.

+1 I know of a few good people that have been laid off lately, its really too bad when it happens. But It usually ends up for the better in the long run, assuming your motivated and have some sort of skill set to offer. Maybe Dorthys dream job is just waiting around the corner
