![]() This might be the wrong place to discuss the merits of a particular brand... but what makes it a "high-end" Salt? Is it the chemical make-up? The consistency of ingredients? Do they guarantee crystal clear water and amazing growth of organisms other than algae???

![]() Generally, better salts will be a closer approximation to NSW than budget products (higher Ca, Mg, ideal pH, kH, no phosphates, nitrates, etc), mix faster and more consistantly and will be less likely to precipitate beneficial elements (higher stability).

![]() That sounds good.... but will they give me a free t-shirt????? (because instant ocean will!!)
![]() I imagine a "premium" salt comes at a premium price, is this something everybody SHOULD be using or is it something for guys who've tweaked and fiddled with everything else they can think of? I guess I'm fishing for is it a night and day difference from IO Reef Crystals? Of course, depending on the price it might have to be ![]() |

![]() Ocean Pure Pro is a REALLY GOOD SALT at a REALLY GOOD PRICE. However, as some people have found, it has the same stability as RC or Kent. Under certain conditions (excessive heat in a mixing tank), the calcium/carbonate may precipitate rapidly.
Tropic Marin Pro extracts a premium because the company has a longstanding benchmark of producing quality products (they've been making products since the late Cretaceous, give or take). You're paying for decades worth of consistancy. Quote:
As far as differences, you'll probably find that there's a lot to do with how much you have to tinker with your beneficial elements (calcium, alk, mg, trace) to get the water to where it should be. I know that Ocean Pure Pro has a really high alk that makes it a bit undesirable to Zeovit users. Instant Ocean is really only suitable for well establish reefs if you're dosing additives religously and to the point where you might as well have bought a higher end salt. Kent has wiped out tanks in the past. Hurray to consistancy on their behalf (although I've heard, via e-rumors, that they have since fixed their problems). RC doesn't have ideal calcium and magnesium values. Anyway, I'm sure Tropic Marin Pro has its flaws too, but from everything I've read, it's the salt of choice wherever it is available and everything I've touted about it is where the salt has made a name for itself. Note that pretty much all salts are chronically lacking in Potassium. There's only one salt out there that has proper levels of Potassium, but it's massive expensive and unavailable in Canada. That said, it's usually only the Zeo users who worry themselves with Potassium (and rightly so!). Most of us aren't dealing with super low nutrient systems where lack of potassium has a lot of highly detrimental effects on the coral.
