Default Direct-Vent Fireplace

Anybody have any experience with installing and/or purchasing a direct-vent natural gas fireplace?

I put one in my basement. Its not difficult, but you MUST make sure you follow the clearance specs for the unit. They are provided by the manufacturer and may vary from unit to unit, so make sure you have the fireplace first before doing your framing. The venting is pretty simple, but must also meet the correct codes for clearances and height. I had to go out through the foundation with mine, so I had to hire a guy to core the hole for that. The gas connection can only be done by a licensed gas fitter.

I got my fireplace from Wood's. I got a mid range model that has a few more features than the basic one that the builder installed on the main floor. It has better lining material for more efficient heat radiation, and it has an automatic temperature control with a remote. There are lots of choices depending on your budget. Like anything else, shop around to get an idea of what is available and to compare prices.

I'm also planning on putting this in the basement and went to Woods to check them out.

What I really want to know is if its worth while for me to buy a used on from the bargain finder then source a gas-fitter and do the rest of the install myself or pay the extra cost and have the supplier save me the hassle and take care of the whole thing. I will still do the decorative mantle and trim myself but I want to know where the convenience versus cost factor meet.

Do you notice much warmth radiating upwards to the rest of the house from the unit in the basement?

We put one in the basement from Classic, it has the the remote thermostat as well (which is awesome) and the fan. It does pump out a lot of heat. The vent can't be too close to your furnace intake I can't remember the distance offhand and it might not be an issue for you. We didn't need any coring done but we had them install the venting. As BMW rider said you need the install manual for the clearances for venting, framing, and surround materials.
