Default computer not turning on

hi, i need some help determining the cause of this problem:
i turn on my computer and nothing happens, a red light on the front comes on, the cpu fan starts, there's a small led light on the motherboard that comes on but nothing else.
by turning it off then on about 10 - 15 times, the computer fires up.
could this problem be the power supply?

any ideas?

thanks

What Motherboard do you have. If you could determine that then we could search online and find what that LED is for. Is the LED on when you successfully boot?
It could be power supply or a post error on the mother board.

Check your cpu fan, it could be plugged with dust or not turning, your cpu won't start or run long if this is the case as it is designed to shut down to prevent overheating. If that is woking fine it might be the power supply.

it's a gigabyte motherboard.
the orange led light is on after the unit starts up.
the cpu fan does have some dust but is spinning.

i would blow the whole computer out with an air compressor. mine does something similar when it gets plugged with dust.

Use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the fan and heatsink and the whole inside of the computer.

It's very likely the power supply is failing. Tend to act very strange before they die. If its not the power supply sometimes removing the bios battery to force the bios to reset. Sometimes the bios gets corrupted by voltage fluctuations. Then start looking at the cpu/motherboard.

Happened to me before. For me, dust was also the problem.

Sounds like a gimped power supply. After blowing out the computer try replacing the power supply, should be $50 or so depending on how quiet of a power supply you want.

First thing to look at, does the power supply fan come on?

If it does, listen for normal startup sounds. If it sounds like its going thru the normal post like it used to but no image, it may be the video card.
