URGENT.. I'm looking for a Ruby Reef Products, to treat ick safely in a reef aquarium. Either HydroPlex or KickIch

What fish is this? How long and how bad is the situation? Maybe a quick fresh dip would be a better and faster solution.

Well it started with a Kole, which stressed b/c of a resident Yellow Tang. When I got things sorted out there, by rearrangement, he already was stressed and developed ick. After a few days that went away, but now a week later it's back, and this time it's infected 2 sleepers, and a clarkii [img]images/smiles/icon_sad.gif[/img]

I don't think a dip will do..

P/S: I'm confident in the recovery of the other fish due to the fact that they eat the food I provide. The Kole has yet to do this and remains a nervous fish.

What do you think I should do?

I would not consider putting chemicals in a reef tank. You had sucess with the garlic, continue. You need to feed just garlic soaked food for a couple of weeks. The garlic likely killed the ich on the fish but was still in the water.
Place a large piece of garlic soaked nori on a small rock secured with a rubber band and place it near where the kile is hiding. Keep the yellow occupied with garlic soaked food on the other end of your tank. Keep the lights off except for feeding.
If it will still not eat you have to consider a dip (like Dipex), a freshwater dip or a QT with Greenex or Tetra Medica Marin OOmed.

Ick in a reef...another way to solve this problem is remove the infected fishes and treat in a seperate tank. Copper sulphate is fairly effective for fishes -- no good for reef. To treat the reef, you must remove all fishes from the reef for at least 4 to 8 weeks. Don't need to add any chemicals -- just leave it the way it is. Since there will be no host for the ick to grow, eventually they will die.

Garlic soaked food method works as long as it is a mild case and the fish are still eating.

Does anybody understands why garlic causes the ick to not attach to the fish ? I haven't heard of an explaination about how it actually works.

Copper sulphate can be purchased from J&L for $5.

As for removing the fish: I don't have a large enough QT to try and put all the fish in there. It doesn't just help to remove some of the fish.
I'm am thinking of trying to removing the Kole which isn't eating and treating with copper... maybe. if the garlic doesn't work. (I still think he might picks the food of the rocks and sand)

Thanks for the article.

From my understanding, the garlic treatment prevents Ick from attaching to the fish and their gills. So, all the fish on the garlic treatment should be okay -- after 2 weeks of garlic food. Since the ick can't attach to the garlic laced fish, the ick has no home and it will eventually die.

As long as all the fishes in your reef are on garlic, and the ones that are not are in a seperate copper QT, then it should be fine. Once the fishes in the QT are well, feed them garlic food too. The garlic food can be used as a preventative maintenance.

How did you make out with your ick problem? Looks like the Powder Blue Tang I picked up at J&L this weekend has some. Got any words of advice. QT tanks in out of the question since I just gave away my old stand and the new one is far from complete.
