LED lights on ebay
Looking for opinions on these LED lights I found on ebay. It's for a 120g 60x18x26 tank. I'm looking to keep corals-lps,softies, maybe sps.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/271270991347 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aquarium-Ree...71270991347%26 Obviously I'd have to rig something for mounting these as they aren't a finished fixture. There are 2 styles bar or square fixture. Has anyone used these or have opinions on them? Thanks! |

Both are way over priced for what's offered, not to mention insane shipping costs. I think we're pretty close to the point now where you should be able to get something locally for a reasonable price that will work for you.
The first link looks like SMD5630 strip lighting which is quite bright but definitely overpriced for the product. With a little DIY work you can order 5 meter reels of these lights, on eBay if you wish, with free shipping from China for around $30 which will in many cases include a 12 volt power supply & dimming control. The aluminum housings could also be sourced the same way, but some aluminum angle procured locally would probably work as well. Same goes for link #2 with respect to cost, although probably a better deal for what you get. This light uses a combination of 50 watt & 20 watt multi chip LEDs, also available as discrete components on eBay for the DIY folks. One thing to note with this fixture is I don't see any fans & I'd be concerned that the multi-chips could be rather short lived. They don't do well if not adequately cooled. Should be a fan on that housing somewhere. I've used 29 of these in the 10 watt power range to build my own fixture which has been running for just under 2 years. Each one is mounted on individual heat sink with fan. A while back I added two lengths of RGB SMD5050 strips for dawn/dusk lighting & to provide just a hint of red & green. Link to my build is down by my name & tank details.

I tried cheap LEDS from eBay before for about a year. They grew SPS just fine. The only reason I switched was due to fan noise. The fans on that particular fixture were loud. I am now running DIYs on my display plus super old used AI SOLs. It's all personal preference. Here's my display. I PM'd you as well.

I run these
http://www.reefsupplycanada.com/d120...ight-16-light/ They are known as Taotronics, Evergrows, no names etc. you find them listed on Ebay all the time and they are amazing. the cost was perfect and they grow corals like mad. Super happy with them and would highly recommend them. I have 3 over top a 72x20x20 tank.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the advice and opinions. I think I may go with some used fixtures and see how that works out

The LED "floodlight" in the second eBay link you posted strongly resembles the LEDs that caused a fire in an Arizona preschool not long ago, described here:
http://reefbuilders.com/2013/01/30/c...d-causes-fire/ So be very careful with those ones! If you go for eBay LEDs, I would stick with the Evergrow/Taotronics style as they have a good track record on the major aquarium forums. |

Thanks again for the replies. I have been looking at the Evergrow fixtures mentioned and am thinking 2 of these would work for my tank. Also looking at the ecoray 60d fixtures x3 for my tank. http://www.poseidonwarehouse.com/LIG...oRay60LED.html
I have read that these have a bit of a spotlight effect. Anyone familiar with these? |
