![]() Hey guys,
Question for those of you who has an experience in changing the light source for SPS corals. What do you think is the safe start would be? I am switching from 6xTek T5 to a 2xDE250W HQI + 4x39W t5 actinics on a 36" long tank 65 gal. How many hours per day should I start from and what is the safe schedule to bring SPS to a full 8-9 hour MH DE lighting period? Thank you. |

![]() I recommend this: you go with the full photoperiod you want to go with (so, if 9 hours, then 9 hours) BUT, with varying on and off during that time. So, something like 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off - for 9 hours. Then after a few days, 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. Then 45 on, 15 off after a few more days. Eventually all on and then you're set.
The other option is put layers of eggcrate over the tank and the desired photoperiod right from the beginning. After a few days remove one layer. Repeat this until they're all off. Above all, observe your corals, if it looks like you're progressing too fast, then slow down or back off a bit .. and so on. Hope this helps!

![]() I think 3 layers of eggcrate would be plenty. Maybe even 2? Hard to say. When the light is on you should be able to make the call if you need more or not. Can you add a tiny little fan into the hood, even temporarily, to help with the heat? That might be something to watch out for as well.

![]() Another option, (if available to you), is to hang the fixture higher, than lower it slowly to the final height. Worked very well for me.
