Website creation courses

I want to learn how to create and maintain a small, fairly basic website, maybe 10-15 pages. I know nothing about doing this. I found a local business college offering a 35-hour evening course for $400 using Dreamweaver. Is this a good start? Is Dreamweaver is a decent program?

Ok, thanks! Are any of these programs user friendly enough that I could figure them out with (many) hours of messing about and a good how-to book to point me in the right direction? Or is this the sort of thing I really should take a course for?

You can always use a template like ones done for Wordpress, ( which runs 22% of all new websites) ... many templates are free, while others you pay for. You will of course need to know a bit of ins and outs for controlling the customization so you will need to learn a bit of simple coding, optimizing graphics ( eg photoshop ), understand ftp/ web hosting, etc.

Lotsa online courses like lynda.com, vtc, etc as well.

Dreamweaver is of course the gold standard for wysiwyg but may be a steep learning curve for someone new to web design. You will also need to learn adobe photoshop and maybe adobe illustrator

K, buy the domain and hosting within a Canadian company, if you are planning to do some SEO marketing. If not, then you can go anywhere, but region of hosting/registration does matter if you are going to try and get organic listings (free) within the major search engines.

I would just tinker with the software, whichever you choose, don't waste the money. The $400 you spend will probably give you basics, but that is something you will probably figure out with WYSIWYG software.

Now, depending on what you do.... Not all sites are the same, and if you are wanting to develop traffic and a business from this site, it may be worth talking to a professional.

If you go to godaddy.com they will do everything for you. You pick your domain, the level of service you want and the style of webpage you want. They have packaged websites like wordpress and they have wysiwyg editors too.

It's so easy now a monkey could do it, gone are the days of needing HTML programming knowledge, networking knowledge, etc.
