Default Calgary Zoo Fresh Water Penguin Exhibit Filtration

We spent a few hours at the Calgary Zoo today. Sadly, I got "distracted" here on Canreef this morning, wound up running a little behind, and neglected to grab my DSLR.

For great zoo photos, you'll have to see fishytime's thread:

I did snap a few shots of the zoo's filtration room for the penguin exhibit on my BlackBerry that might be of interest, however.

The photos suck, but the operation impressed me.

I tried to get a few shots of their carbon units, but the glare was brutal. You can kind of see the big blue carbon tanks in this photo. They have three of them.

After seeing this room for this little exhibit . . . I really want to see the Vancouver Aquarium's filtration systems.

Thanks for posting those.....I wish we had the time and patience to wait the two hoursthats what the marker signs said) to get in to see the penguin exhibit, but Saturday was, well, a zoo at the zoo....we started at the west end and were too pooped to stand in line that long

I stood in line and sent Hubby and our little guy to wander the dinosaur exhibit. The line actually moved a lot faster than the signs indicated, as there were a lot of strollers and wagons that were taking up room. I was lined up a little past the 1.5 hour marker, and stood in line for about 45 minutes. We were there as soon as it opened. Within two hours there was barely a line. I guess everyone planned to beat the rush.

It is a nicely done exhibit. It is quite small, but it is open air. They have four different species of penguin, and a couple of them are really interesting. The King penguins almost look like inner tubes in a way: very round and very buoyant. Some of the penguins (Rockhoppers) are like little torpedoes or missiles under the water. They've got interesting yellow plumage . . . They almost resemble the "Predator" in a way.

I enjoyed it. I wish we could have spent more time in there, but our three-year-old is always looking forward to his next discovery and became impatient.
