The term "Black Friday" originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day

Apparently that wiki page is now deleted. Reason I understand it be called that is that if a store was "running in the red" (ie. deficit), the Friday after Thanksgiving (biggest shopping day in day in the U.S.), that store would be back in the black.
