Default Deep Sand Beds

Has anyone had a DSB for over or around the 5 year mark?Mine is around there and Im noticing slime algae. I know of other long term reefers having the same problem. Anyone know if your substate should be changed out every few years?

Mine is about 1 1/2 deep, sugar size that's never been changed in 6 years.
I have added some new to the old a few times after coming back from Mexico, which I would then get brown diatom cycle for a week or so.

I will only change my SB if it starts to bind together like cement!

cheers, Rich
